day two of therapeutics: an offer I couldn’t refuse

One of the three main questions of yoga: “why am I here?”. On the first day of training, Aadil asked us to introduce ourselves with our names, where we’re from, length of time studying Purna Yoga, and the reason why we were here. When my turn came around, I answered with, “My name is Letitia Walker from Asheville, North Carolina. I’ve been studying with Aadil since 2004, Savitri since 2008, and I’m here because I got an offer I couldn’t refuse.”

That offer was a golden ticket tucked away in just three of almost 60 Assessment Questionnaires handed out at the Purna Yoga Teacher’s Retreat in July of this year. None of us could know as those questionnaires got passed throughout the room that three of us would end up with a coupon for a generous discount off the therapeutic training in October.

But I knew as soon as I saw the golden ticket that I would be attending this training, even though I had just told a fellow teacher that I was not going. It goes without saying that I’m grateful to have gotten a golden ticket but I’m grateful that I chose to accept it as well. Thank goodness it was an offer I couldn’t refuse.

As I sat in class yesterday, watching Aadil use my x-ray as a case study for the class, I couldn’t believe how lucky I was to be in the room, to have the buffet of therapeutic techniques for the neck laid out in front of me, and to get to study with exceptional teachers (Aadil, the assistants, and all the other teachers in the room).

Arlo Guthrie once said, “It’s possible to do for yourself, what you want to do for other people.” Many teachers choose to attend therapeutic trainings to help others. While I will be doing that too, what I’m really getting out of this training so far are the tools to heal my own neck.

I can’t wait to post x-rays of my neck with a beautiful, healthy, cervical curve. Get ready folks, we’re going to be taking our neck work to the next level.
